Welcome to Science, Research and Statistics
We carry out a range of science and research projects to influence our policies and examine the use of new technologies. This site has information about the three key science and research areas mainly controlled by the Science & Research Group.
Research, Development & Statistics
We provide information to help policy teams and ministers make evidence-based decisions. Our research helps the police, probation service, courts and immigration officials to do their jobs as effectively as possible. The Research Development and Statistics (RDS) website contains statistical evidence published by the Home Office, and commissioned research and studies carried out by the directorate.
Animals in Scientific Procedures
We develop policies on the use of animals in testing, and ensure best practice is followed in the treatment of animals. We include the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Inspectorate, which offers advice on licence applications, monitors compliance and provides professional advice to the Home Secretary. Updates and information about our work is published on this website.
Home Office Scientific Development Branch
The Scienctific Development Branch is made up of scientists and engineers who develop technological solutions to fight crime. We also provide advice and operational support to the Home Office, and its agencies and partners. Our innovations help detect fingerprints at crime scenes and conduct surveillance operations and scan for drugs and explosives. Latest news and information about our developments are published on this website.
