About us
About Animals in Scientific Procedures
The Animals Scientific Procedures division forms part of the Home Office Science and Research Group.
Within the division there are two teams:
-
Animals in Scientific Procedures Licencing and Policy team
-
Animals in Scientific Procedures Inspectorate
We also work closely with the Animal Procedures Committee (new window) who are supported by the Science Research Group Secretariat.
We work closely together to balance the requirements of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 with the interests of science and industry and animal welfare. Read more about the roles and responsibilities of our different teams in this section.
Our objectives
We are responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the Animals (Scienctific Procedures) Act 1986 including:
-
the provision of a professional Inspectorate
-
advice and support to Ministers on casework, policy, Parliamentary business and related correspondence
Our role in safeguarding experimentation
Parliament has built in considerable safeguards to allow experimentation in limited circumstances and to ensure proper regulation and monitoring; our work underpins this.
Although the situation may change in the future, the development of a number of new drugs, and medical and veterinary technologies which help to reduce suffering and prevent large-scale infections among humans and animals continues to depend on this carefully regulated use of animals for testing and research.
