About us
Encryption of documents
The Home Office Animals Scientific Procedures Inspectorate (ASPI) and Division (ASPD) take personal data security extremely seriously.
With immediate effect, we are offering all stakeholders the option to select between two services to encrypt electronic data, emails and email attachments. The CJSM system is preferred since it facilitates routine secure e-mail correspondence with minimal inconvenience to users.
For your own protection we strongly recommend all stakeholders use one of these services when submitting information to us electronically.

Notes for stakeholders
Stakeholders should also note that with effect from 1 May 2009, the following procedures for handling electronic data transactions come into force:
1. ASPI and ASPD will recommend that all personal and other confidential information exchanged by e-mails, attachments or electronic media, is encrypted to be FIPS 140-2 compliant or to an equivalent standard.
2. ASPI and ASPD staff will not request or require that e-mails and attachments or other electronic data are sent to us without appropriate encryption.
3. ASPI and ASPD staff can still receive non-encrypted communications containing sensitive personal data but will prefer to enter into subsequent electronic correspondence about such material using one of the encryption services recommended above. If this is not acceptable to the individuals concerned then we will only issue unencrypted replies with their knowledge and agreement and on the understanding that they have taken an informed decision and are fully aware of the risks.
4. ASPI and ASPD staff will not initiate any e-mail correspondence or electronic data transaction with stakeholders other than in an encrypted format if it is likely to contain sensitive personal information unless the individuals involved have clearly indicated that, mindful of the risks, this remains their preferred means of exchanging such information.
