Why Some Epileptic Seizures are Longer Lasting than Others

The primary aim of this project is to increase our understanding of why some epileptic seizures terminate spontaneously (lasting only seconds to minutes), whilst others self-sustain, and can continue for up to hours at a time. In particular, this project is interested in the role of chemical naturally present in the brain, adenosine, in the transition from self-limiting to self-sustaining seizures, which might lead to new treatment approaches for patients with prolonged seizures.
