The study a model for parathyroid gland development

Congenital hypoparathyroidism (under-active parathyroid glands) affects 1:4000 live births. Hypoparathyroidism causes low calcium levels in the blood and this can lead to painful cramps, muscular weakness, and possibly epilepsy in the short term and in the long term result in abnormal calcium deposition inĀ  the brain, skin and other organs. People affected by hypoparathyroidism need lifelong treatment with calcium and vitamin D.
