Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where cells of the immune system attack the
b
cells of the pancreas that produce insulin. This attack destroys the
b
cells and diabetes occurs as a result of the lack of insulin. We aim to study the role of the killer cells of the immune system that are responsible for the early phases of attack on the
b
cells to define a) why cells that are normally responsible for protecting against infection damage these cells of the body, b) how they become activated to kill the
b
cells and c) how protection against this attack can be achieved.
