502: Spontaneously hypertensive studies
There are three major objectives to this continuing work:
1. To identify genes and molecular mechanisms underlying the development of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease.
2. To identify the genetic determinants of susceptibility to myocardial and cerebral ischaemia (vascular diseases of the heart and brain) and elucidate the role of free radicals (i.e. highly reactive molecules which damage proteins, membranes and genes) in this process.
3. To develop improved vectors (i.e. a virus that can be used to transfer modified DNA into cells) for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular gene therapy.
