516: Immunobiology – hepatitis viruses in rodent models
There are nearly 600 million chronically infected carriers of hepatitis B and C worldwide. These patients are at a greatly increased risk of developing cirrhosis and liver cancer with a consequent loss of quality of life. We need to know which components of the immune system are not functioning properly, thus allowing the viruses to establish a chronic infection.
