13 July 2006
HOSDB's National Technical Support Unit (NTSU) recently provided equipment and training to Gwent Police to help them in their campaign to reduce knife crime.
The airport-style archway metal detectors we provided and trained local police to operate were set up at the entrance to two Newport nightclubs. Clubbers had to walk through the detectors, ensuring no knives could be taken into the nightclub.
The action, supported by the nightclubs, was part of the national knife amnesty initiative. Gwent Police hoped that it would encourage people to dispose of weapons while making sure that anyone carrying a knife to the nightclubs would be detected.
The NTSU provide hands-on technical support to the UK's law-enforcement community to help not only in day-to-day policing but in support of major security events. We hold a central stock of the latest search and surveillance equipment that is provided to police forces on request. This avoids all forces having to keep complex and expensive eqipment
